Takayama

Takayama — the "Little Kyoto of the Hida Mountains" — preserves Edo-period merchant townhouses, a thriving sake brewery district and one of Japan's most celebrated morning markets, the Jinya-mae Asa-ichi. The Hida Folk Village open-air museum showcases 30 traditional gasshō-zukuri farmhouses set against a dramatic mountain backdrop.
